I use the Grid system hotkey layout, I don't remeber if it is the default one. You can customize the hotkeys in the menus. I found it very annoying, that I accidentaly added villagers to my army control group when being raided.Īt first using hotkeys is slower but once you learn them and they become second nature it is much faster. I have selected the option in the menus, that if I drag a box and both military and villager units are in the same selection then only villagers would be selected.(I think it was "c", not 100% on that one). If you need more fine tuned control and don't want to send all back to work then you can select building where villagers are garrisoned and press "c" for them to return to work. They even turn around and go back to work if they haven't reached their destination shelter yet. This is especially good hotkey because you don't have to have villagers or anything at all selected. To put villagers back to work I use "r" (custom hotkey) - this makes all villagers return to work from shelter ("work" means last action that they were doing before you pressed "g" for them to seek shelter). If you are being raided / villagers are under attack, then select villagers who are at danger and press "g" - that makes them seek nearest shelter and automatically allocate to different shelters if they can't fit in the nearest one. Now you have average people playing, say they win 3/5 qualifiers and thrown in Gold/Silver they win their next 4 matches and are placed in Gold/Plat then.Use Attack move (select units, press A, right click on GROUND near enemy units) if you want units to engage enemy efficiently (not regular right click). For example during a fight I press space bar (select all newly produced military), then shift + 2 (add to control group 2) and then I click them where I want them to go (you can also click on the minimap). It selects all military that isn't moving, fighting, patroling. Custom hotkey: Space bar to select all IDLE military (not ALL military, I don't recommend using that one).Control group 1 for my beginning scout, 2 and 3 for army.I press F1 and then "Tab" as many times as needed, to cycle through the types of military production buildings and use hotkeys to produce. You don't have to set this in the beginning of every new game. F1 - this is I think the default hotkey for selecting all military buildings. For example you can select all idle villagers at once and make them make a lumber or mining camp. Shift + "~" to select all idle villagers at once. Tilde key "~" (left from number 1) for rotating through idle villagers. With H you have to cycle through town centers but with control group you can select all of them at once and just press Q a couple of times. Ctrl defines control group and shift adds to an existing one. Every new Town Center also I add to the group (shift + 4). Put beginning Town Center under control group 4 (ctrl + 4).This is how I do it (you can of course develop your own habits):
